A common cause of pain and discomfort in the feet caused by a number of reasons including nail shape, foot structure, footwear, which can often result in the nail being pushed into the flesh, causing the Ingrown toenail. Ingrown toenails can be managed conservatively, however removal of part or all of the nail is often a more appropriate management pathway.
Fungus in the nail is a common podiatric complaint, which is caused by fungus that we usually find on our skin and nails, finds it way into the nail. Fungal toenail infections can usually be managed using topical and/or oral medication. Some infections can be severe enough to warrant removal of the entire nail.
There are many reasons a patient may opt for nail surgery. This may mean the removal of some or all of the nail. In the case of an Ingrown toenail, It may be deemed necessary to only remove the nail spike, particularly if there is bacterial infection present. Other presentations may require removal of the entire nail.
